Changes in 2011
End of default retirement age
The default retirement age of 65 will be phased out between 6th April 2011 and the 30th September 2011. The last date for giving six months notice of retirement under current legislation will be Wednesday 30th March 2011.
You will still be able to compulsory retire staff after that date. However you will have to use job specific criteria to justify compulsory retirement.
Maternity leave
From the 3rd April 2011 fathers will be able to go on maternity leave in place of mothers for up to six months. All mothers are entitled to take up to 12 months maternity leave after their baby is born. They can take it irrespective of length of service or hours of work each week.
Right to request time off for training
From April 2010 employees in businesses employing 250 people or more were given the right to request unpaid time off work to be trained in skills that they think will make them more effective at work. The right will be extended to cover all companies, regardless of their size from April 2011.
