Changes in 2010
Equality Bill
The bill will make it legal to take positive action to increase representation of groups that are under represented, and protected against discrimination. It is illegal to discriminate on the grounds of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, religious belief and gender reassignment. So for example if a company thinks that there are not enough women in Senior management it can favour women for promotion provided they are equally qualified as men.
Fit Notes
From April fit notes replaced sick notes. They will say if the person is not fit, or fit for some work. If they are fit for some work it will say what kind of work and what adjustments should be made so they can work. There is no longer a category saying fit for work.
Right to request time off for training
From April employees in businesses employing 250 people or more will have a right to request unpaid time off work to undertake work to be trained in skills that they think will make them more effective at work. The right will be extended to cover all companies, regardless of their size from April 2011.
